OVERVIEW
As a Marketing and Promotions intern, I honed my design and social media management skills in a professional setting. Aside from managing the Instagram account, I also expanded into the career development website to make it more user-friendly/accessible. During my time with the career center, I grew the social media presence from the ground up. We have reached an audience of over 5,000 users! That reach has also been felt through content interactions, which is +500% from our earlier months. Below I have detailed my projects throughout my internship.
JOB FAIR PROJECT
Throughout my time as a social media marketing intern at Dominican University of California, my biggest project was marketing the Job Fair hosted at the school. We had 20+ employers attending and had to get the word out of all their different industries to appeal to all the various majors that attend Dominican. One aspect I took charge of was the creation of the poster used for marketing the job fair. I designed it to be simple, playful, and appealing to students as they walk through the halls. To educate the student body of the attending employers, I worked within my team to develop Instagram stories cohesively detailing each employer.
USER EXPERIENCE
Cleaning up the career center website was one of my first tasks in this internship. I noticed that the website was a bit crowded with linked images and long text. My solution was to take a step back and think "How can I categorize each section into the fewest sections?" and take in the site as a student would. As a busy student, we often do not have much time to read or the patience to look for what we need in a sea of buttons. I narrowed the home page to 4 simple buttons (internships, finding a job, networking, and career prep)!
The page that I felt needed a bit of work, in terms of user experience, was the internship page. The page was full of long text that I felt would be tough for a user to read. My solution was to rearrange the information on the page. Before, the page had information about finding an internship lumped with information for students with an internship, then a handy visual breakdown of that process for interning students. Instead, I felt that breaking apart the start of the internship search info and info for interning students was key to making the page easy to understand for more people.
INSTAGRAM MANAGEMENT
Most of my days were spent researching career development information to compile into educational posts to feature on the Career Center Instagram or creating job posts from the job board where any local jobs can be found. I would also create educational posts for students all about various career prep ideas and strategies!
